Finally

Just today we finally got the morning routine down smoothly--it's about time.

Tim woke up M first to eat her breakfast while Makenzie and N leisurely pried their little eyes open. Got myself showered and dressed, fixed the girls' hair and got everyone's school stuff put together while Makenzie ate her breakfast.

Let the dog out, fed her and locked her in her jail for the day.

I got N to the elementary school right on time. Not too early (where we had to wait in the parking lot for the school to open) and not too late (where the line of cars extends halfway to Houston). I scooted him across the crosswalk in the parking lot and on his way to the cafeteria for breakfast at 7:31am.

Made it to Makenzie's daycare at the right time, disembarked her and got her settled with NOT A TEAR SHED. So what that I had to bribe her with bubble gum after I pick her up. Whatever works right?

Screached into the parking lot at work at 7:58 and through the front door at 8am on the nose with my obligatory dessert (homemade at 10:30 last night, I might add) for Food Friday in hand!

Advantages to Stress

1) My insomnia is cured--I'm so tired by the time I get to bed at night that I don't even bat an eye until the alarm goes off.

2) I've lost 5 pounds since last Friday morning! Woot!

3) My OCD is under control--I'm too drained to care if my floors aren't swept and the furniture isn't dusted.

Almost 5 days

We've made it almost 5 days with our new additions to the household. We ended up only keeping the 2 older kids (4 and 6 years old). The dynamic in the house became much more managable once the little one was returned to the previous foster home. The other 2 kiddos are now free to be kids and not feel like it's necessary to parent their younger sibling. They will all get to see each other and play together periodically.

We're working on getting a routine down, enforcing the rules consistently and teaching sharing and not tattling. It's definitely a work-in-progress!

Keepin' It Real

Our first foster care placement arrived on our doorstep Friday morning at 10am in the shape of 3 siblings ages 2, 4 and 6. Two separate caseworkers arrived with all of their belongings in duffle bags and a notebook for my reference. They dropped the kids off, inspected their rooms and were gone....and so it begins.

Someone commented on my facebook status yesterday that I was "superwoman." In case there's anyone else with that perception who might read this blog, I just wanted to take a moment to rid you of that illusion. In an effort to "keep it real", I am gonna tell you....THIS.IS.HARD. Harder than we thought it would ever be.

At 9:30pm last night, I was just pulling into the driveway with the 6 year old in tow after spending the late evening registering him for after school care and lugging him with me to Target to buy school supplies, carseats x 3, and miscellaneous other things we didn't know we'd need. Tim had gotten the other 3 (including our biological daughter) ready for bed and tucked in.

As we both collapsed into each other on the sofa downstairs, the enormity of what we have begun set in. Tim was in tears (sorry babe, keepin' it real here, remember?) and I was doing my best to hold it together.

Tim asked me how I was feeling and I replied with "You know that feeling you got in the pit of your stomach before you walked down the aisle at our wedding....or the one you got when my water broke and you knew we were coming home with a baby and there was no turning back? That's it."

I'm not gonna lie, we've already had the "we don't know if we can do this" discussion with the caseworker this morning and we've called on Jesus so many times, He's probably had enough of us already.

This is a calling though...to love someone else's children, to answer when they call us Mom and Dad, to say "yes" when they ask "do you love my brother?", to cuddle them when they crawl up in our lap, to protect them, to nurture them, to kiss them and hug them, to provide the necessities and to prepare them to be better at life than their parents have been.....even if it's only for a week, a month or a year. We'll do our best.

Some people have asked how Makenzie's doing. She's having fun playing with them, she's tattling on them and being tattled on just the same, she's sharing toys, she's calling them brother and sister and she's said they can stay. We're giving her extra attention too so she knows she's special.

Friday Afternoon Update

Homestudy was approved, we are just awaiting our "facility number" to be assigned by the state. That should take place by Tuesday or Wednesday of next week.

The sibling group I mentioned in my last post are no longer an option, but we are now focusing on another group of 3 kiddos ages 2-6.

And again....we wait.

Wow--that was fast!

So as I mentioned a couple of days ago, our licensing should be complete by week's end. I wasn't expecting the email I got at lunch to come quite so soon...

"3 boys ages 1.5 to 5 years old removed due to physical abuse--will you consider them?"

I think I've kept this whole process at arm's length because it seemed like it would take so long. I have an ability (which I'm not really so fond of truthfully) to keep my emotions in a nice little box that I only take out when I am ready. Sometimes, they sneak out when I'm not expecting them.

I read that email and my heart rate quickened, my stomach dropped and my eyes teared up. 3 little boys all alone in the world because someone they trust has hurt them--how can I say no?

This is going to be harder than I thought....

Happy Birthday

....to the two most important men in my life--my dad and my husband.

Love both of you! Tim--I hope your day is great. Dad--hope there's something good on tap where you are today!

By the end of the week....

....we should officially be a licensed foster/adoptive home. Woo hoo!

Party at The Bounce

They started off jumping on the velcro wall bouncer (without the velcro suits).

She finally got the nerve up to go down the slide...

About to chicken out....

Oh okay....I can do this!

Hallelujah

This post will seem very inconsequential to most of you out there in the cyberworld, but I feel the need to shout from my little rooftop here in this corner of bloggerland.

Tim's lab results were posted to the patient portal this morning in preparation for his quarterly check up this afternoon and everything has gone down significantly since last time.

We've been working (read: I've been nagging) really hard to get these things where they need to be and make him healthier so I want to just say a really loud "WOO HOO and thank you Jesus" this morning!

Busted!

Makenzie’s like many other kids in that she does not like very many vegetables at all. I can get her to eat salad (no tomatoes), corn (is that a veggie really?) and green beans if she has ample amounts of ranch dressing to dip them in, but that’s about it unfortunately.

I usually at least give her a small serving and try to bribe her by saying “You have to eat 1 piece of _____ or you can’t have ______ later on.” My dream is that she’ll suddenly decide she likes them some day.

This weekend Tim mashed up some cauliflower and tried to disguise it in some mashed potatoes. There were no visible pieces whatsoever and you certainly couldn’t even remotely taste the cauliflower, but Makenzie took one bite and froze with her mouth packed full of mashed potatoes like a little chipmunk.

I asked her what the problem was and she said “There’s broccoli in these tatoes (her word for potatoes).” I shot a glance at Tim and we both chimed in with “No way silly—those are mashed potatoes—I don’t see any broccoli in there—see they’re all white, no green stuff.” Makenzie responds by sticking her pinchers in her chipmunk mouth to dig around and pull out the tiniest piece of cauliflower you could see without needing microscope.

You just can’t get anything past this kid anymore!
