Kids CAN Learn from T.V.

Last week, Makenzie randomly began counting in Spanish one evening. She was 100% up to 5 but it became a little jumbled after that. She could say the words, but they were in the wrong order.

So I asked her if she learned that at school.....nope, she said "Dora taught me."

Haha---in case you're not well versed in children's t.v. shows, she's referring to Dora the Explorer! So there you have it--kids can actually learn something from t.v.

Ramsey Family Adventure 2009

Day 2 cont'd

After the caverns, we took a driving tour through the wildlife ranch so we could cool off in our a/c.

While we were on vacation, we stayed at the T Bar M Resort, which I highly recommend. It's very family friendly and they even do summer camps for kids there. Once we have foster kids, we'll probably take them to camp there while we hang out at the resort. They have athletic facilities, pools, a rock climbing wall, and they even show a movie outside every evening.

Day 2

Tuesday we went to the Natural Bridge Caverns. It's 70 degrees in the caverns, which extend to about 200+ feet beneath the ground, but it's 99% humidity. The tour took about 1.5 hours and man were we sweaty by the time we made it out of there! There aren't really any stairs, so the whole time you have to baby step down these steep slopes and then haul yourself back up at the end.

We took a mini vacation this week to New Braunfels for 4 days. We left Sunday and stopped in San Marcos for some outlet mall shopping in the extreme Texas heat. Final count: Tim-2 tshirts, 1 pair of shorts, 2 button-down shirts, 1 pair of shoes; Makenzie-4 outfits from Gap and Gymboree; Mommy-4 shirts and 1 pair of shoes; our house- 2 lamps and 1 framed piece of artwork.

DAY 1

Monday we decided to beat the heat by playing at Schlitterbahn. Makenzie HATED it. I think I chose the wrong ride to start her off on and she was permanently traumatized. We stayed for about 3 hours in the morning and then left for lunch/nap time and came back in the evening for another 3 hours. Tim and I only got to ride about 5 rides because most of our time was spent in the kiddie sections trying to keep Makenzie happy. This is a "before" shot. As you can see, she looks really happy to be there!

This is after that first ride--she drank half of the Comal River.

This is after the Congo ride--they had to open an escape hatch and let us out because she FREAKED out right before the waterfall.

This expression captures her sentiments exactly.

But she was MUCH happier in the kiddie sections.

Cancelled.....again

45 minutes before the appointment, for good reason, but still very frustrating.

A Little Nervousness

Tonight is our 3rd time to be scheduled for our adoption homestudy (it's been cancelled by the case worker the other 2 times due to issues in his life). I fully expected for him to call or email to cancel again, but so far we haven't heard from him....so maybe it's actually going to happen this time.

That being said, I'm getting a little nervous. I picked up/neatened up the house as much as I could last night because I'll be at work all day today (unless I can sweet talk my supervisor--Becky, if you're reading this, do you feel sorry for me?). I know he doesn't care too incredibly much about how much dirt is on my floor or dust is on my furniture or how many beds aren't made or toys are on the floor, but I do :)

On the way to school this morning, Makenzie asked me "What's next in the story tonight after school?" That's her way (no idea where she got it) of asking what we're doing tonight after school. I reminded her again that the man who will tell us if we're going to get a brother or a sister will be coming by to talk to us. She reminded me again that she wants a baby so she can be big and they can be little and I reminded her again that we might not get a baby this time. I reminded her that she needs to mind Mommy and Daddy while the man is there and that she needs to not be shy and answer his questions for her. She's a three year old...this could be bad.

So please be thinking of us tonight about 5:30. Pray that my dog doesn't bark or at least that she doesn't bite, that he's not allergic to my cats, that my child doesn't show him her panties or demonstrate her ability to say curse words and that my husband can keep his foot out of his mouth for at least 3-5 hours while this man is in our house. Thanks in advance!

Anybody have any Xanax I can borrow?!

Busy Week

Last weekend we made another day trip to Calvert to buy chocolates here. They are $3 a piece, but they are quite yummy. While we were there, we made an afternoon of it by browsing all of the little antique stores. It was really alot of fun, even though I had to restrain Makenzie from having her way with the stuff in most of the shops.

This week is really busy for us in the evenings, but it's mostly fun stuff:

Monday: We went swimming because it's really our only free night this week. Makenzie can now swim the width of the pool (with floaties on, but still) and she'll jump in from the side (as long as I am there to catch her).

Tuesday: Nanny's (my grandmother's) 85th birthday--dinner and cake to celebrate.

Wednesday: gymnastics--this is the night Makenzie waits for ALL week

Thursday: Our homestudy is scheduled for the 3rd time--not holding my breath, but we'll see!

Friday: Tim's hosting his friends for game night.

Saturday: Texas Reds Festival (unless it's toooo hot), cleaning, packing and doing laundry for our VACATION.

Sunday: Leave for our vacation! Yippee!

A Day at the Museum

Today, we took advantage of this offer from our bank and took a day trip to the Houston Museum of Natural Science. We only toured the permanent exhibits and the Cockrell Butterfly Center, but it was just enough for a 3 year old's attention span. I was only able to take photos in certain portions of the exhibit hall, but here's a sampling of what we saw today.

Poison Dart Frogs--they were the most brilliant royal blue (yes, they're real).

Tim's long-lost brother.

This was my attempt at an artistic picture of one of the gems in the gem & mineral exhibit.

Makenzie's Many Musings

"I can know how to do it!" (When she wants to do something for herself.)

"I'm getting big and taller Mommy and it makes you very sad." (When she is proud of herself for being a "big girl.")

"Is that gonna be a big problem Mom?" (When she's asked me to do something.)

"You're not my best friend anymore." (When she's mad.)

"I want something different else." (Usually at dinner time or when getting dressed.)

"Sure babe!" (When you ask her if she wants something in particular.)

Start Praying Please

UPDATED: Scratch the homestudy for now. Our casemanager's wife delivered their baby a month early yesterday. It's postponed indefinitely. :(

Our homestudy has FINALLY been scheduled for 3pm this Sunday afternoon. It will take between 3 and 5 hours!
